The 1880 census shows the first time that the Parsons family is in a U.S. census. Arthur is 7 years old and living with his parents and four siblings: Martha, 5; William, 3; Samuel, 2; and Mary, just three months old.

By 1900, Arthur had been marrried to Anna for four years and they had two children:Wilbur M., 3; and Victor H. just a year old. Arthur was working as a brick moulder at this time, and the family was living at 14 Roberts Avenue in Queensburytown, New York.

By 1910 a lot of changes had occurred in the Parsons family. For a short period between 1900 and 1910 they had lived in Rocky Hill, New Jersey. Several of their children had been born and died between 1903 and 1907. Despite the losses, their family grew to include Mildred, 9; Ethelyn, 3; and Theodore, 1. By this time they had moved to Central Avenue, Tottenville, Richmond, New York.

4. Arthur Parsons household, U.S. 1920 census, Richmond, Westfield County, New York, enumeration district [ED] --, supervisor's district [SD] --, sheet --, dwelling 110, family 118.

Arthur was now working as a foreman for Terra Cotta, Co. Their family now included an additional son, Ralph, who was already 8 years old by 1920. Arthur continued to work for Terra Cotta as a presser in 1930. At this point, the Parsons family had finally purchased their own home worth $5,000 at 130 Butler Avenue, Tottenville, New York. Mildred and Ralph remained unmarried, and Ethelyn who had married Raymond Peterson four years earlier were living with the Parsons as well. Mildred, Raymond, and Ethelyn all worked at S.S. Whites.

Notes:
Arthur was the first of the Parsons' children to be born of Henry and Frances Ellen Parsons. His birth certificate states that he was born "on the water". Arthur's father and mother were enroute to Canada along with Henry's brother and his wife, William and Mary. They arrived in Canada in 1873 and remained there for nearly 7 years. During this time, Frances Ellen birthed four more children. Soon after her fifth child was born in 1880, Henry, William and their families left for America. They settled in Queensbury, Warren County, New York. By this time, as shown in the 1880 U.S. Census, Arthur's siblings included Martha (5), William (3), Samuel (2), and Mary (3 mos.). His father was working at a pottery factory, most likely Terra Cotta in Rocky Hill, New Jersey.

In 1886 Arthur married Anna May Adams and by 1900 they had two sons Wilbur M. (3), and Victor H. (1) born in New York. Arthur was now working as a moulder at Terra Cotta. The following year Mildred would be born and in 1902 Vivian. But tragedy would strike twice in 1903 when both Wilbert, then nearly 6 years old and Vivian barely a year would die. If that was not enough in 1907 Charles, not yet three years old would die of lobular pneumonia.

In 1910 things had settled down and Arthur and Anna were living on Central Avenue in Tottenville, Staten Island. Their fourth son, Chester Theodore was born in 1909 and Arthur had advanced to "presser" at Terra Cotta Company. Two years after Chester, their last child, Ralph was born.

In 1920, the Parsons family moved to 397 Elliot Street in Staten Island. Victor was working on a houseboat, and Mildred was working in the "gold room" at S.S. Whites. Arthur was now a foreman at Terra Cotta Company.

With Arthur continuing to work at Terra Cotta, 130 Butler Avenue became the permanent residence of the Parsons family in 1930. At this time Ethelyn was living there as well with her husband Raymond Peterson. Mildred, Ethelyn and Raymond were all working at S.S.Whites, a dental equipment manufacturing company.

In 1940, Arthur died and was buried alongside his three small children who had been buried at Rocky Hill Cemetery, in Rocky Hill, New Jersey not far from the Terra Cotta Company where he had worked for over 50 years.

Arthur's spouse's maiden surname is derived from Chester Parson's birth certificate. See Chester's profile to view copy of birth certificate.
