1. Jacques Arnold entry, Dettwiller Births N, 1861, 4E 88/5., Archives departementales du Bas-Rhin, France.

2. Jacques Arnold entry; La Touraine Passenger Manifest, 24 March 1894, list , line 110; in List or Manifest of Alien Passengers for the United States, Sailing from La Havre, Arriving in New York 24 March 1894; www.ellisisland.org

Jacques was returning to New York City from La Havre in March, at the age of 32, seven months before his marriage to Sophie Gaeckle. He has one piece of luggage and is riding in the forward compartment of steerage. It indicates that he was visiting Germany and was still an alien working as a baker.

3. Arnold-Gaeckle marriage certificate, no. 11623, (1894), Bureau of Records, Health Department, City of New York.

4. Jacob Arnold household, 1900 U.S. census, Manhattan, New York, population schedule, New York, enumeration district [ED] 236, supervisor's district [SD] 1, sheet 3A, dwelling 6, family 55.
This census gives the month and year of each individual. Jacob was born July 1861, and Sophie was born 1868. Their place of birth is listed as Germany; Alsace was currently German occupied. Their home at this census taking was in an apartment house at 409 Fifth Street in Manhattan, New York. For an occupation he is listed as a laborer. Though married 6 years no children are listed as having been born.

5. Jacob Arnold household, 1910 U.S. census, New York, New York, town of Manhattan, enumeration district [ED] 606, supervisor's district [SD] --, sheet 5A, dwelling ---, family 81.

By 1910 Sophia, now 41, and Jacob, 48 were living at 2449 Eighth Avenue in Manhattan with one child, Fred, now 6 years old. Between the last census and that of 1910, the Arnold family had lived in Bridgewater Township, Somerset County, New Jersey, where Fred had been born. This census shows that Jacob immigrated in 1891 and that he had been naturalized by this year. Sophie immigrated in 1888. At this point Jacob was working as a baker and Sophie was keeping house and looking after their child.

6. Jacob Arnold entry; S.S.La Savoie Passenger Manifest, 4 October 1919, list 4, line 15; in List or Manifest of Alien Passengers for the United States, Sailing from La Havre, Arriving in New York 19 October 1919; www.ellisisland.org

{ship manifest page 1}

{ship manifest page 2}
This ship's manifest shows that Jacob spent time visiting his nephew, Charles Reeb, in Quatzenheim, Alsace. At 58 years old, Jacob was 5'7" and had brown hair and blue eyes. He was living at 502 West 130 Street in New York City.

7. Jacob Arnold household, 1930 U.S. census, New York, New York, enumeration district [ED] 31-871, supervisor's district [SD] --, sheet 24, dwelling ---, family 432.

By 1930, Jacob at 61 was working as an elevator operator in an apartment house. Sophie remained at home which was on West 130th Street in New York City at this time. Only 5 months prior to the taking of this census their son Fred married and moved to Staten Island. Jacob and Sophie, now living alone, were still renting and did not own their home at this point.

8. Jacob Arnold death certificate no. 14585 (1944), Bureau of Records Department of Health Borough of Manhattan.

This document shows that Jacob Arnold, widowed since 1941, was living at 1033 Hugenot Avenue in Staten Island. His birthplace is listed as France, but that he was at this point a citizen of the United States. His birthdate is listed as 4 July 1861 and lists his parents as Jacob Arnold and erroneously lists his mother's name as Marguerite "Albogact" rather than Marguerite Arbogast. He died just short of his 83rd birthday after having been ill and hospitalized for about 3 and a half months prior to his death.

Notes: Immigrated to the United States from Dettwiller, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France in 1891. Naturalized
