Notes:

Edwin Coyle was born Edwin Coley on 1 January 1916. His mother, Lulu died the day after his birth. Soon after, his mother's sister, Eva Gonder Coyle and her husband, James E. Coyle, took him in and brought him up as their own. He is found in the 1920 U.S. Census, listed with them as their son. He lived in South Carolina at least until 1930 according to the census of that year.

On the 23rd of April 1937, at the age of 21, Edwin filed a name change order in Hudson County, New Jersey, which was granted 17 May 1937. From that point he was legally Edwin Coyle. His original birth certificate has been sealed and the copy in Trenton has the name change certificate overlayed so that the original cannot be seen.
